Asbestos and Talc
I don’t believe too many people feel worried about asbestos anymore. Maybe we still should. Recently, Johnson & Johnson recalled baby powder due to asbestos concerns. This isn’t the first time they have made the news either for this same issue. Asbestos was also found in Claire’s cosmetics. As in, the Claire’s that everyone takes their little kids to get their ears pierced.
Did you know…
It may take anywhere from 10 to 70 years after the initial exposure for asbestos-related diseases to develop. Asbestosis can develop in as few as 10 years. Related cancers usually take 20-50 years to develop. The U.S. incidence rate of mesothelioma peaked in the 1990s and has been slowly declining since.
How is asbestos getting into these products?! Through talc!
Talc (Additional Names: Hydrous Magnesium Silicate)
A naturally occurring mineral, mined from the earth. It may be contaminated with asbestos, a known human carcinogen. Animal studies performed by the National Toxicology Panel have shown some evidence that even asbestos-free talc can be carcinogenic. Perineal use of talc-based body powder has been classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
Talc is an ingredient used in many cosmetics, from baby powder to blush. With the exception of color additives, the law does not require cosmetic companies to share safety information with FDA, with the exception of color additives.

Do you need baby powder for your sweet little baby’s bum? Nope! I’ve never used it. I use Maty’s baby ointment, and is usually cheapest at Walmart.
Do you know what’s in your cosmetics?
If you don’t, start the ingredient list! If you don’t see it on your packaging, well..that’s already concerning… but look online! If they don’t disclose it, maybe they are hiding something!
As a consumer, you deserve full transparency! If you become disturbed by what you find, I’m here to help! I purchase all of my make-up through Crunchi.
